In about two years’ time, a three-time Wally sailing-yacht customer will take delivery of a custom Wally 101. This European sailor is as eager to take the top spot in regattas as he is in putting smiles on the faces of his family during leisurely cruises.
With styling and interior design by Wally’s in-house team, the project features naval architecture from Judel/Vrolijk & Co. The yard and studio have collaborated before, on the Wally 107 Open Season plus yachts with the Wallycento box rule. In fact, this box rule, with specific parameters for length, beam, displacement, and more to get the best performance, is the inspiration for the Wally 101, too. In this case, LOA is 101 feet (30.8 meters), beam is 24’7” (7.49 meters), and displacement is 56.4 tons. Wally says that displacement is about 20 percent less than similarly sized and configured projects. Additionally, it says that about 40 percent of her weight is in the keel.
Of course, the sloop also has a lifting keel and a variety of Wally-created systems to enhance performance. For example, she has Wally’s retractable drive shaft, to reduce drag by about five percent. This, the yard asserts, can turn into a 10-second gain per mile. Furthermore, it says, she should see 18 to 20 knots easily when cruising. Yet another Wally-developed system, Magic Trim is a hydraulic ram integrating with the push-button sail-handling system. The Magic Traveler system will be helpful as well. It adjusts the clew position up and down plus in and out via hydraulic rams.
With 6,781 square feet (630 square meters) of upwind sail area, the custom Wally 101 provides an amidships cockpit for the family to enjoy. Eight people can dine here, too, or sunbathe just aft. Inside, meanwhile, the master suite contains a cozy TV area, accompanied by two more staterooms for the other generations. A central skylight should make the saloon and inside dining area more welcoming for everyone, including the four crew.
Two final notes: Firstly, this is the 48th all-carbon-composite sailing superyacht from Wally. Secondly, she’s the first Wally sailing yacht signed under Ferretti Group’s ownership of the brand.
