In Swahili, nyumba means “home.” A hands-on, ardent sailor seeking his next yacht for global cruising, a true second home, has found his solution in the fourth SW96 from Southern Wind Shipyard. Despite being part of a series, the sailing superyacht is still highly tailored, including being the shipyard’s first hybrid project.
The SW96 series saw its first delivery, Seatius, in 2018, and its most recent delivery, Ammonite, last year. The 96-footer (29.24-meter) features naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design, plus styling and interior design by Nauta Yachts. Already in build (below), Nyumba employs a carbon fiber hull with a lifting keel and gear suited for short-handed crew. Overall, she has the GT deck design, with changes requested by the owner. “Clear, uncluttered deck equipment positioning allows for easy circulation onboard, and the mainsail track and steering positions are completely new,” explains Massimo Gino of Nauta Design. “The GT styling makes everything look breathtaking in its simplicity and lightness.”
For flexibility and especially environmental impact, Nyumba has BAE Systems’ HybriGen hybrid propulsion system. Briefly, it provides electric power for low speeds, plus power for all hotel loads while the engine is running. Further important, it complies with the strict IMO Tier III emissions standards. While Southern Wind Shipyards has not specified the setup, BAE Systems offers it with the ability either to lessen reliance upon or to eliminate a diesel genset.
Regardless of how she operates in a given situation, Nyumba has two guest staterooms amidships for friends or family. They and the owner, who has a forward stateroom, can relax in the saloon or the TV room—what’s usually a fourth guest stateroom. Additionally, they can ask the crew to launch a 15-foot (4.5-meter) tender from the garage for exploring.
With superyacht regattas possibly on the owner’s agenda, too, the SW96 Nyumba should see delivery next summer.
