With prices starting at $543,000 (€545,000), the U-Boat Worx NEMO personal submarine can be in your hands starting next year. What’s more, the company believes it can deliver 1,000 units of this one- and two-seat sub series within the next eight years.
Capable of depths to 330 feet (100 meters), the U-Boat Worx NEMO is comparable to other personal subs’ abilities. However, the Dutch manufacturer says its serial production has reduced costs by 40 percent, and that consumers therefore pay 80 percent less than for competitors’ models. The manufacturing process and the goal of 1,000 deliveries by 2030 suit U-Boat Worx’s original focus. “We set out on a mission to introduce safe and effortless access to the underwater world to as many people as possible,” Bert Houtman, its founder and chairman, comments.
Initially introduced in 2021, the compact U-Boat Worx NEMO subs suit a variety of yacht LOAs and garages. Similarly, it suits the launch ramps of essentially every marina. The larger of the two models, the two-seater, is five feet (155 centimeters) tall and 7’7” (231 centimeters) wide. It weighs 5,510 pounds (2,500 kilograms), too. The nine-foot (280-centimeter) length suits on-deck stowage or below-deck garages as well. The classification society DNV certifies each sub, plus owner-operators or captains get hands-on training on delivery. That training takes place either at your yacht or at one of U-Boat Worx’s facilities in Curaçao.
Regardless of whether you choose the one- or two-seater, the NEMO sub comes with an acrylic spherical viewing port. That lets you take in the sea life around you as you travel underwater at about 3 knots. A battery-powered propulsion system makes the leisurely speed possible. Enjoy voyages lasting up to eight hours, in air-conditioned comfort. Safety systems are of course onboard as well.
“Nothing is more liberating than diving into an unknown world of exploration and discovery,” says Lex van Rijswijk, NEMO’s product manager. “We are excited to see volume production of the NEMO usher in a new era of ocean exploration.”
