The company owning the largest standalone recreational marinas in the United States and the largest operator of coastal marinas along the U.S. West Coast are now one. Suntex Marinas is partnering with Almar Marinas. The agreement will see the marinas under Almar’s ownership plus the Almar’s marina-management division officially become Suntex properties.
Suntex, which further has the most U.S. boat slips under its ownership, therefore gains some prestigious properties. Particularly noteworthy, the famed Marina Del Rey Marina (above) in Marina Del Rey, California, joins its fold. Further California facilities are part of the deal, too. They include Peninsula Yacht Marina, Bahia Marina, and Westport Marina. All are in Channel Islands Harbor in Oakland. In total, eight Almar-owned marinas in California and nine under its management in California and Hawaii are involved in the deal.
Bryan Redmond, CEO of Suntex Marinas, says several factors made joining forces with Almar attractive. Firstly, he points to how Almar Marinas and its management team share Suntex’s ethos of “delivering a world-class hospitality experience to every marina customer with the knowledge that marinas are many things to many people.”
Randy Short, CEO of Almar—which dates to 1974—agrees. “Our philosophy at Almar is that a marina is not just a place for a boat to berth.” In fact, he says, “it’s a complex set of diverse and interrelated activities designed to mee the needs of boaters and the public.”
Ultimately, Short says, the goal is “to create a quality resort-like experience that is safe, clean, secure, and friendly for our customers and our communities.”
Pending government approval, the four Oakland marinas should become part of Suntex Marinas within the next 60 days.
