Sanlorenzo has spent the last several years researching cleaner ways for yachts to operate. Fulfilling a pledge to provide customers with proven solutions, it launched the yacht Almax last year with a “green” methanol fuel-cell system. She’s the first Sanlorenzo 50 Steel yacht and paves the way for more like-minded projects to come.
“Green” methanol refers to methanol from renewable processes and therefore without harmful emissions. The fuel-cell system aboard the superyacht converts it into hydrogen, then electricity. Sanlorenzo collaborated with Siemens Energy to develop it. Different from hydrogen fuel cells, the yacht doesn’t need to store hydrogen onboard. Up to 100 kW of electricity can result for hotel loads, according to Sanlorenzo, without enlisting the genset or engines. Considering how much air conditioning, lighting, entertainment systems, and similar creature comforts run, it’s an impactful solution.
Further impactful, this time on the owners’ and guests’ leisure time, the Sanlorenzo 50 Steel yacht series has a patented Hidden Engine Room (HER) system. Briefly, it permits a single-level engine room with an “under deck” area for all other technical systems. This simultaneously keeps the 1164-footer (50-meter) under 500 gross tons and opens up usable lower-deck space.
For instance, the owners and guests gain an extra lounge, which Sanlorenzo refers to as the Ocean Lounge. It leads out aft to the beach club—which has a pool—and forward to the guest staterooms, complemented by a spa and gym.

What guests will notice most, however, is that the superyacht has staggered decks. This split-level spatial arrangement debuted on the Sanlorenzo SP110. As effective as it is in making that megayacht look and feel larger, it’s even more successful aboard the 50 Steel. Five staggered decks in total literally and figuratively open up spaces and create different experiences otherwise unattainable.
Enjoy this taste of the ambience throughout, from Piero Lissoni. Classic meets contemporary style by combining coffered ceilings and rich woods, along with modern furnishings. While you’re watching, consider that the 50 Steel is “a fundamental milestone” for Sanlorenzo, according to Massimo Perotti, its chairman and CEO. It’s not just a historic milestone, but also one “in the spirit of innovation and sustainability.”
