With a significant volume of 1,900 gross tons, the first Sanlorenzo 74 Steel yacht just launched this weekend. “This is our most ambitious project,” says Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo’s chairman and CEO. However, size isn’t the most important factor. “We’re challenging the idea that size equals excess,” he continues, while simultaneously upholding Sanlorenzo’s core beliefs.

Firstly, as much as the 74 Steel yacht series is semi-custom, it’s far more flexible than many offerings in the marketplace. Each of the three hulls under contract has a different interior, of course. More significantly, each has a slightly different LOA due to the owners’ choices for the bow shape—a surprising difference compared to other builders. Generally speaking, though, the LOA is 241 feet (73 meters).

Secondly, each owner has a choice of propulsion system. The first two hulls feature diesel-electric systems, for instance, while the third uses more conventional twin diesels. On a related note, Sanlorenzo is continuing to develop a hydrogen fuel cell system that eventually will see availability for projects like this.

Since the first Sanlorenzo 74 Steel yacht interiors are still in the finishing stages, designers Margherita Casprini and Francesco Paszkowski are sharing insight. “The owner placed particular emphasis on the interiors,” Paszkowski says. “We focused on translating those requests into spaces of refined elegance and functionality, while maintaining a constant dialogue with the stylistic codes and classic details that define Sanlorenzo’s identity.” Therefore, many of the custom furnishings echo the exterior shapes of the megayacht. Overall, Casprini characterizes the ambience as being warm and modern. Matte-finished woods provide “a natural, refined feel,” she notes, “while more eclectic materials bring vibrancy and uniqueness to the various spaces. Each en suite bathroom, for example, features a different variety of marble with colors and textures carried through into the artwork onboard.”

Spread over nearly 1,400 square feet (130 square meters) of interior space and even more alfresco space, the owners’ deck is a haven. Waking up in the king-size bed means waking up to extraordinary views forward. It also means being able to walk out to a reserved terrace-like spot. Since all five guest staterooms—two twins, two doubles, and a full-beam VIP—are one deck down, owners are close to family yet still secluded. In fact, when they need alone time, the owners can ask the crew to close off the stairways connecting to their deck. The owners’ kids probably won’t mind, since their cabin is on the same level as the saloon/cinema lounge.

With a glass-bottomed pool on the aft deck, the Sanlorenzo 74 Steel yacht has some enticing relaxation areas. Significantly, the beach club and wellness area gain good floorspace from the more compact nature of the diesel-electric system. Fold-down platforms complement the gym, while a massage room, a sauna, a hammam, and a plunge pool all beckon. Since so many buyers are family oriented, a welcoming family room suits little ones nearby.

The owner of hull number one, who is expected to christen the yacht as Silver Fox, wants the crew to feel just as welcome. One specific request: a crew-only gym. Yet another: a hydroponic garden on the tank deck to grow vegetables for everyone’s meals.

The bottom line for Sanlorenzo is “offering our clients a yacht that feels fully customized without losing the reliability of a proven platform,” explains Tommaso Vincenzi, Sanlorenzo’s CEO.
