Ocean Alexander 35P Yacht Strives for Global Appeal: Megayacht News Onboard

Ocean Alexander has an enviable customer base in the United States, including yachting enthusiasts who have bought multiple subsequent models. “But there really is a huge, untapped marketplace that we never really truly appealed to stylistically,” notes Sally Doleski, vice president of marketing. The Ocean Alexande 35P yacht is the answer to that. With details by a designer familiar with international tastes, the builder is confident that from America to Asia, clients will appreciate her “pure yachting essence,” Doleski says.

Making her global debut at March’s Palm Beach International Boat Show, the megayacht features the work of Cassetta Yacht Designers, headed by Giorgio M. Cassetta. Over his 22-year career, he’s perhaps best known for his work with Benetti, but he’s further collaborated with Tankoa Yachts and others. When Ocean Alexander came calling, he and his team took up the challenge. “There was a lot of history and heritage to be respected, but we also wanted to do something brand-new,” Cassetta says.

That heritage includes a reputation for incorporating abundant stowage throughout. It’s especially evident in the main-deck galley. The Ocean Alexander 35P yacht, a 114-footer (35-meter), gives the chef big Sub-Zeros, a 100-bottle wine refrigerator, and corner cabinetry with swivel-out shelves maximizing space in ways few yachts in this size range do. (Also, although not stowage-related, the galley has a big window, rivaling some builders’ guest stateroom windows.) Similarly, Ocean Alexander regularly finishes crew areas to a level on par with guest areas, such as the mini foyer to the galley off the starboard-side guest foyer.

One of the biggest ways that Cassetta and his team bring something new to the proverbial table is the décor. Hull number one features the Nautique package, with African Thai wood and charcoal-stained oak. It further features white soles with stainless steel inlays. Altogether, they bring the colors and patterns of the exterior inside. “It’s not a hotel, it’s a home on the sea,” Cassetta says. “It needed to be classy but absolutely welcoming.” Similarly, yet with different tones, hull number two, premiering at the Fort Lauderdale show this fall, will have walnut-tinted eucalyptus with black-stained sereno, an oak wood.

Speaking of classy, the skylounge aboard the Ocean Alexander 35P yacht (above) makes a statement. The big bar is like a sculpture, for instance. In combination with ample seating opposite, it certainly will get frequent use. Additionally, the deck is entirely walkaround, making it more practical. Further to this point, the glass separating the skylounge from the wheelhouse can turn opaque—adjustably opaque, too. The degree can depend not just on the captain’s or owners’ preference, but also the time of day.

With heightened style from the beach club to the atrium-like interior stairway, this project particularly wows in her flexibility. The foredeck lounge, for instance, is usable three different ways. Firstly, a guest or two can stretch out on the sunpad against the wheelhouse while others enjoy the hot tub. Secondly, when the yacht is underway, the sunpad slides to cover the hot tub. This creates a U-shape settee against the wheelhouse, with a cocktail table (previously supporting the sunpad) sliding back to accompany it. Finally, uncover the hot tub by sliding the sunpad to sit atop the cocktail table between the settee and the tub. Tracks in the teak sole make moving the sunpad easy for one person to handle. Plus, none of this impedes the crew’s access to the foredeck gear.

Just before press time, hull number one sold to a couple who had seen the yacht during the Ocean Alexander Rendezvous in the Bahamas in April. They happen to be Americans who’ll keep the yacht in Tampa. However, voyages from the British Virgin Islands to the northeastern United States mean covering a lot of territory. Since the “P” is the model name stands for “Puro,” or “pure” in Italian, that’s still pure yachting essence.
