A megayacht that was about two months from completion was destroyed in a fire on Saturday at Baglietto’s shipyard in La Spezia, Italy.
Hull number 10202, which would have borne similar styling to Blue Scorpion and Gitana (shown above), was the third in Baglietto’s 53-meter (174-foot) series. She’s unfortunately too far damaged to be restored, according to Sara Gioanola, the yard’s press officer. Gioanola also says the shed containing the yacht was destroyed.
So far no cause has been determined, though the fire did break out onboard, according to a statement released by the yard. The good news is, apparently no one was hurt when it occurred or in the process of putting it out. Baglietto staff as well as the local fire department, police, port captain, and harbor authorities reportedly responded to the accident, helping to contain the fire to the shed where the yacht was under construction. No other buildings or boats were affected.
The yacht was set to launch on Valentine’s Day and be delivered at the end of March.
Other yacht-building activities are reportedly continuing as normal.
