Expedition yachts that are converted commercial vessels seem to hold a particular fascination with yacht-watchers. Alucia is one of those, mostly due to her purpose as an ocean-exploration platform. As I’ve written previously, her owners are underwater documentary filmmakers and plan to make dives by themselves as well as with scientists to learn more about how to protect sealife.
They won’t just be donning scuba tanks and fins, though. The 185-foot Alucia totes two Deep Rover submersibles, which are being shown here for the first time. They’re monitored both onboard Alucia in the “mission control room” as well as aboard Australis, a custom 33-foot, rigid-hulled inflatable tender.
Her owners anticipate making critical contributions to marine science. Here’s your first look at Alucia’s tenders and launching systems.
