Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&N) has signed a joint venture for marina development throughout Asia, bolstering its existing efforts to create marinas in China.
C&N is partnering with First Eastern Investment Group, a Hong Kong-based private-equity firm. Founded in 1988, First Eastern mostly invests in manufacturing, construction, financial, and real estate industries in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and other Asian countries. Together, the two companies plan to use their individual industry experience and regional experience to support other firms wishing to expand marina operations around the continent. In addition, First Eastern is investing £4.2 million (about $6.9 million) in C&N, by acquiring shares.
Camper & Nicholsons First Eastern, as the joint venture is being called, will be based in Hong Kong. Additional offices will open in Beijing and Shanghai.
C&N has already contributed to the design of four proposed marinas throughout China. One is in Sanya, on Hainan Island. The 350-berth marina will be a Volvo Ocean Race stopover next February and permit megayachts to 50 meters (164 feet) to dock there. A second marina, illustrated above, is in the northern city of Tianjin, whose name means “a port for the emperor.” The 830-berth marina will contribute to a larger plan by the government to turn Tianjin into an international harbor and economic center.
UPDATE, DECEMBER 19, 2011: Camper & Nicholsons First Eastern will oversee studies and design for a new marina in Huizhou, located in Guandong province. Oceania Point Marina will be part of a resort, complete with golf courses and hotels, and offer berths for megayachts. No further details are available as of yet, as the commercial and operational studies are ongoing.
