The Columbus 40S Hybrid (formerly called the Columbus Sport Hybrid 40M) premiered at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. She’s among the few diesel-electric megayachts on the market. Italy-based Columbus believes that “green” is the way to go for both propulsion and construction. As such, the Columbus 40S Hybrid, with an LOA of 131 feet (40 meters) and with styling and naval architecture by Hydro Tec, was built to comply with RINA’s voluntary Green Plus notation. The above-mentioned engine package, created in conjunction with Hydro Tec, is cleaner than traditional diesel power. It lets the Columbus 40S Hybrid run on her twin Siemens electric motors alone up to about 8 knots.
Recognizing that some owners still like a bit of speed, the Columbus 40S Hybrid has a sporty side. In fact, the “S” in “40S” stands for “Sport.” It’s due to the megayacht making a reported 18- to 20-knot cruise and a 23-knot top end.
The all-aluminum megayacht further has accommodations for six guests plus the owners and a crew of six plus the captain. It’s an enviable crew-to-guest ratio, in a soothing, sedate atmosphere created by Hot Lab.
