With a number of stylish 80-foot-plus megayachts in the marketplace, how is a buyer to choose? If you’re a fan of the work of noted designer studio Nuvolari-Lenard, the MCY 86 yacht will turn your head. So, too, will her volume and the ability to personalize the look and layout.
Measuring 86’3” (26.3 meters), with a 21’2” (6.46-meter) beam, this new series from Monte Carlo Yachts certainly feels voluminous. The numbers back it up. Displacement is 72 tons, for instance. While some European-built competitors are in the same ballpark, one popular American flybridge model is 60 tons. The owners of Never Say Never, the first MCY 86 yacht in the United States, accentuated the sense of volume with dark wood soles. (The version in the photos is the first European-owned launch.) They also selected leather-wrapped window mullions. A variety of marbles and other stones are available to all buyers, too. A common feature between the American- and European-owned MCY 86 deliveries to date is the ability to close the helm from the relaxation areas, via doors.
One thing the owners of Never Say Never appreciate: the fold-down balconies off the main deck. Few megayachts in the MCY 86 yacht series size range offer them. The owners can keep the balconies folded up and still enjoy an indoor-outdoor atmosphere thanks to sliding glass doors.
The signature ports so prominent in the styling of the MCY 86 grace the master stateroom. Monte Carlo Yachts offers a variety of cabin arrangements, though all place the owner’s space below decks, due to the enlarged saloon and helm’s configurations.
Including the master, three- to five-stateroom layouts are available. Never Say Never has a four-cabin arrangement, with this VIP accessed via stairs aft to starboard in the saloon. A twin cabin accompanies it. What are other options? The VIP and master can both be full beam in a three-stateroom configuration, for example. In yet another version, the master is more like a suite. Specifically, it occupies much of amidships, with the VIP and a twin taking up equal footprints just aft.
Besides interior volume, the MCY 86 makes excellent use of alfresco space. While docked at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last month, Never Say Never was near competitors’ displays, and the difference in relaxation areas was dramatic. This bow lounge is far larger than anything the other builders offered, for example—if even offered at all.
A carbon fiber top with a sliding soft center is one of the primary highlights of the flying bridge. Sunbathe, dine, soak in the hot tub, or just enjoy the reported 24-knot cruise as you head to your next destination. Whatever you choose to do up here, you’ll have a lot more space at your disposal once again than comparable-sized megayachts.
Part of the Beneateau Group, Monte Carlo Yachts expanded into the 80-foot-plus range to offer buyers more choices than other brands. The builder also offers more usable space, particularly outside. The MCY 86 is an impressive entry into a crowded field. It should be interesting to see what the upcoming MCY 105, in build for debut next year, has to offer, too.
