Austria-based Dominator Yachts may be a new name to you. Established in 2000, the builder has been quietly marketing its all-custom, sporty craft inside American borders for a short while. Hull number one of its Dominator 800, for example, debuted in Miami earlier this year. With hull number two having hit the water in springtime, and with offerings to 131 feet (40 meters), Dominator Yachts intends to push further into the American market.
Dominator is working with Constantinos K. Constantinou, a longtime yachting industry sales representative, to broaden its reach. This is in addition to its current representation in Florida by Yachting Experts. The fact that the builder has delivered 130 yachts to date should help.
In seeing that Dominator offers eight different models, you might think that the customization process is limited to non-structural bulkheads and decor items. But, Dominator does indeed invite owners to tailor everything. For example, with hull number two of the Dominator 800, the fiberglass construction incorporated carbon fiber. Furthermore, structural and non-structural bulkheads were rearranged to increase usable interior space. A special request of the owners: a casual dining area that included an equally informal galley (above). And, the propulsion system incorporates Fortjes 4000 counter-rotating propellers, which are known for efficiency. Dominator says that at low speeds around 9 to 10 knots, she burns just 12 gph (46 lph), seeing a 1,450-nautical-mile range. And, at the reported 24- to 25-knot cruise speed (at half load), this Dominator 800 consumes a total of 122 gph (460 lph). Range at that speed: 390 nautical miles.
Further of note, Dominator is allowing customers to “experience” their yachts prior to delivery. It’s using virtual reality for one model so far, the Ilumen, measuring 85 feet (26 meters). By standing on a special platform, buyers can essentially walk through the yacht and see the spaces as if they were truly in existence. If they see a tone or texture they don’t like, it’s no problem. The press of a button changes everything instantly.
