About a month from now, the scaffolding surrounding Gipsy will be removed, and she’ll slip out of her shed and into the water. She’s the first Otam 35SD, with “SD” signifying she’s a semi-displacement design.
A number of factors drove the decision to create the Otam 35SD, part of the Italian yard’s Custom Range. It wanted a relatively shallow-draft cruiser to appeal to the international market. As a result, the 115-foot (35-meter) Otam 35SD should draw 7’2” (2.2 meters) at full load. In addition, the Otam 35SD was meant to be as voluminous as possible. Displacement is therefore 295 gross tons.
The Italian owner of Gipsy was attracted to these parameters, plus the ability to tailor her to his tastes. With Design Studio Spadolini, which also styled the Otam 35SD, he created a cinema space within the saloon. This relaxation area comprises about 431 square feet (40 square meters). A customary dining area is also on the main deck, as is the galley and significant-size pantry. The pantry is more than half the size of the saloon, 269 square feet (25 square meters).
Gipsy is also customary below decks, with four guest staterooms and three crew cabins. But, she departs from the norm by placing the owner’s suite on the third deck. It occupies all of that deck, in fact.
Sea trials are expected to confirm a 22-knot top speed under Caterpillar power. The Otam 35SD was engineered for a best range of 1,000 nautical miles at 11 knots, too. Following the summer cruising season, Gipsy will debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
