Rugged styling and rugged ability are true explorer yacht hallmarks. You can call them expedition yachts, adventure yachts, or a host of other names. The common denominator, besides looks and performance, is purpose. They’re made for making the most of the world’s oceans. Amels and its shipbuilding parent company Damen address this niche, having delivered a few of these purposeful cruisers, too. One, Axis (above), even sold as a result of the Fort Lauderdale show last year. She and the newest Damen Yacht Support vessel, New Frontiers, will be at the show next week. Individually or together, they’ll encourage you to explore some new frontiers of your own.
Both Axis and New Frontiers measure 181 feet (55 meters). Because of their vast aft decks and sturdy construction, they can hold a mini armada of tenders, production boats, and even submarines. There’s 2,045 square feet (190 square meters) of space for these terrific toys. In fact, Triton Submarines held demo dives a few weeks ago for its 1650/3 LP sub with New Frontiers as the mothership.
While some customers use the Damen Yacht Support vessels as primary vessels, they’re also tandem cruisers with more typical, so-called white yachts. Since each project is custom designed, guest staterooms and other living areas can go aboard, outfitted with fine woods and other materials. New Frontiers, for example, has relaxation spaces for both owners and guests. Among them, you’ll find a panoramic lounge on the main deck. It occupies 323 square feet (30 square meters). Nice-size crew’s quarters are aboard, too. Furthermore, she’ll have a helicopter as well as a Triton sub aboard. On a related note, the Damen Yacht Support vessels have true helipads, and upon request heli hangars.
Rather than have a helicopter onboard, the owner of Axis decided on a sea plane. He also has plenty of tenders and a submarine, since Axis serves a supporting role to his primary yacht.
New Frontiers will be at the Bahia Mar show displays, near the Amels stand. Meanwhile, Axis will be at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.
