The craftspeople at Perini Navi’s Viareggio, Italy facility welcomed a new project recently. Well, not entirely new, since the sailing superyacht is already partially constructed, thanks to their colleagues at the shipyard’s Turkish facility. Nevertheless, the hull of the 42m E-volution is now on the premises, and will remain there until completion in summertime 2020.
The 138-foot sailing yacht is the first in a series from Perini Navi’s own design team as well as Reichel/Pugh. “E-volution” is the series name because each yacht incorporates hybrid propulsion. This marks the first use of the technology by the shipyard. Specifically, an electric motor will take on some of the propulsion duties with one main diesel engine. It therefore reduces fuel consumption and emissions. While Perini Navi does not say if the electric motor will operate the yacht on its own, it has finally disclosed performance details. The 42m E-volution should enjoy a 3,000-nautical-mile range while traveling at 9 knots under the typical diesel propulsion.
Of course, due to Reichel/Pugh’s contributions, the 42m E-volution is also a performance sailing superyacht. The American studio is responsible for naval architecture as well as the sailplan. Featuring aluminum construction, the yacht further features a lifting keel to bolster performance and handling. Draft varies from 11’5” to 18 feet (3.5 to 5.5 meters). Sloop-rigged, she has a carbon fiber mast, boom, and rigging, too.
Perini Navi has kept interior renderings out of the media so far. However, the 42m E-volution does have some promising places where the owner’s party of eight can spend time. Sure to be popular, the aft deck is terraced, leading down to the water.
The news of the hull’s arrival comes on the heels of another milestone for Perini Navi. The Perini Navi Eco-tender took to the water for the first time in March. This compact power megayacht will complement a sailing yacht, also from the builder. Delivery for the Eco-tender takes place next month. In addition, two more E-volution models are in build, along with yet another sailing yacht and two additional motoryachts.
