Sustainability initiatives are gaining ground across all types of businesses. The new wave of customers are more environmentally minded, for instance, and therefore seek similarly minded companies to patronize. Likewise, management teams across various industries recognize the important of supporting sustainability. Arguably, yachting executives are more aware than many. Perini Navi’s management team is among those trying to effect positive change. Perini Navi’s new corporate sustainability initiative involves both employees’ everyday habits as well as the crews of its deliveries.
In terms of its employees, Perini Navi is eliminating all plastics from its premises. Therefore, this means no plastic utensils or plates in the employee cafeteria. Instead, the shipyard intends only to use recyclable and sustainable materials. Yet another example of employee involvement is a beach cleanup. On June 8, which is World Oceans Day, several staff will participate in picking up garbage and other waste from the beach in the shipyard’s home of Viareggio, Italy.
Perini Navi’s new corporate sustainability initiative goes further, too. In fact, the builder has an entire year’s worth of activities planned. It has already communicated one aspect of the program to the captains of its sailing and power yachts around the world. Perini Navi has asked these captains to take photos in their travels to document the health of both the oceans and the coastlines. In addition, the shipyard has asked the captains to share their images with its headquarters. The goal is to create a photographic “report” on what’s happening around the world to our ecosystems.
An even bigger part of Perini Navi’s new corporate sustainability program is its partnership with the One Ocean Foundation, The foundation is a nonprofit that develops specific projects to safeguard marine life. One such project focuses on technological innovation and research. The shipyard is contributing its own discoveries, which include how its yachts perform. In particular, the just-launched Eco-tender and the E-volution sailing superyacht each feature hybrid propulsion.
Finally, Perini Navi is supporting the Charta Smeralda, created by the One Ocean Foundation. It’s an ethical code of conduct under which companies commit to engaging in an environmentally responsible way. Therefore, they pledge to reduce endangering marine life and coastlines.
