While yacht agents sometimes deal with owners, more often they assist captains and crew. In brief, yacht agents provide the logistical assistance necessary to ensure a yacht visit, whether with the boss or charter guests onboard, goes smoothly. In the United States, American Yacht Agents provides this service regularly for foreign captains and crew. Capt. Deb Radtke and her team lend shore-side support in multiple ways, with a primary one being customs and immigration assistance. Unfortunately, confusion and flat-out misinformation exists among some crew on what visas they need, and why. Thankfully, Radtke sets the record straight in this episode of Megayacht News Radio.
Whether you represent an owner or you’re an owner yourself, this is an educational opportunity you should not miss. Radtke will arm you with the information your captain and crew need. She discusses, for example, which visas crew should apply for, and why. These visas are the appropriate documents whether you’re simply cruising stateside or pursuing refit work. In addition, Radtke explains how some crew rely on well-meaning but uneducated fellow crewmembers in crew houses for “facts.” Furthermore, and just as important, she discusses the importance of ensuring crew refrain from posting certain things on their social media accounts—things that immigration and customs officials might misinterpret and therefore use to deny a visa application. She even straightens out some confusion we had ourselves.
