In late 2018, British builder Pendennis acquired the majority share in Barcelona-based Vilanova Grand Marina. The interest went beyond the 48 slips on site. The duo is developing a service center on adjacent land. Opening in the early fall as Pendennis Vilanova, it expands Pendennis’ refit reach into more of the Mediterranean, plus transforms the marina into more of a technical marina.
Vilanova Grand Marina opened about a decade ago as a purpose-built megayacht marina, capable of accommodating yachts to 426 feet (130 meters). The limited berths were also part of the original idea, for a more intimate and personal ambiance. Situated about 30 minutes from the international airport and 35 from the heart of Barcelona, the location is further convenient.
Pendennis announced its “major investment” in the marina last October, additionally announcing plans for the refit facility. “This will complement our already successful international business operation in Palma, as well as our main base in Falmouth,” Mike Carr, Pendennis’ joint managing director, said at the time.
The marina will continue under the name Vilanova Grand Marina. Furthermore, it will continue accommodating both yachts seeking short-term slips as well as winter berths. The refit facility, meanwhile, will carry the name Pendennis Vilanova. When phase one completes this fall, it will include a 630-ton (640-metric-ton) lift. It will also have 129,167 square feet (12,000 square meters) of hardstanding space, as illustrated above.
Even with the formal refit facility not yet complete, Pendennis Vilanova has, essentially, already been operating. In fact, over the past several months, some in-water service has taken place, according to Ruben Hernandez, the marina’s general manager. Some of the yachts include Pendennis’ own builds, seeking pre-Med-season works. They also include others seeking routine maintenance.
Tyrone Harvey, Pendennis Vilanova’s manager, declares it a “strong start.” For the future, “Pendennis Vilanova projects will benefit from continuity of care through a combination of tradespeople from our home base in Falmouth and local subcontractors.”
