The triangular pattern on the upper-deck windows, along with the elongated boat deck and tiered lower leisure areas hint that this custom Damen Yachting 72M (236-footer) is for an owner with a sharply honed vision. He’s tapped Michael Leach Design for the looks, and has an equally honed vision on how she should operate.
In fact, the owner intends to travel globally, sometimes in environmentally sensitive regions. To that end, the megayacht includes hybrid propulsion. Due to Damen Shipyards Group’s experience with hybrid vessels, the Damen Yachting 72M is using PTO/PTI (Power Take Off/Power Take In) technology. Briefly, it’s a “smart” system for operational flexibility and reduced fuel consumption. It does so by directing power and/or extra energy where needed. So, for instance, while the megayacht can run on traditional diesels, she also has a battery bank that can run her drives at up to 8 knots. Additionally, her battery bank can power all hotel loads at night and during other standard situations. Furthermore, excess stored energy can go toward silent cruising. Jan van Hogerwou, Damen Yachting’s commercial executive, says all of this fulfill the owner’s intent “to explore new places in some of the most challenging waters in the world.”
The Amels and Damen Yachting teams further say the owner has “an exceptional interest and aptitude” for yacht design. For instance, synthetic teak decking covers expansive outdoor areas. These areas are for relaxation as much as stowage, judging by the lounge chairs, hefty crane, and rugged tenders seen above. While you can’t see them, the Damen Yachting 72M also will have a helipad and a car. One of the two visible tenders, a 29-foot-long (9-meter-long) utility craft, will transport the car.
Not yet known, however, is what the interior will look like. Michael Leach Design is working with the owner’s interior designer on spaces for 12 guests. So far, we know a dedicated owner’s deck is a highlight. Twenty-four crewmembers, other staff, and specialists will have cabins as well.
The yacht, also fitted with a pool, will see delivery in 2024.
