A recent report from a firm tied to BNP Paribas finds that trading in NFTs hit nearly $18 billion last year, a dramatic increase over the $82 million total in 2020. Many of these digital assets are gateways to exclusive experiences, too. With that in mind, Oceanco has launched Superyacht NFTs, a collection where acquisition opens the door to ongoing benefits.
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. It’s a one-of-a-kind digital asset with verified ownership rights. Essentially anything, from an autograph to artwork and to music, can be turned into an NFT. A number of music artists and luxury brands are offering NFTs as the “keys” to private parties, whether real or virtual. Additionally, as with anything highly collectible and speculative, values rise dramatically depending on the rarity. As for those values, they’re in cryptocurrency, requiring buyers and sellers to have crypto wallets. The above-mentioned report finds that people holding or trading NFTs last year own more than 2.5 million crypto wallets, up from 89,000 in 2020.
Oceanco is the first superyacht shipyard to announce it’s entering the NFT world. “Entering the world of NFTs felt like a natural progression,” says Paris Baloumis, the group marketing director. “We wanted to make sure we offered something unique and exciting.”
Firstly, Superyacht NFTs is a collection of designs by Timur Bozca of Bozca Design. They draw largely on the Esquel concept, a 345-footer (105-meter) from the design studio and Oceanco. Just as this explorer yacht carries off-road vehicles and other strikingly different toys for rugged adventures, the Superyacht NFTs assets each will have their own features, themes, and settings.
Secondly, Superyacht NFTs, on the Ethereum blockchain, provide the holders continuing access to both real-life and virtual experiences. While Oceanco hasn’t specified what those are, they’re coming in conjunction with partner brands.
Eventually, Oceanco intends Superyacht NFTs to offer add-on digital assets. For instance, holders can acquire speedboats, other toys, and accessories, as seen in the “toy garage” at top. And finally, Oceanco is donating a percentage of revenue from the NFTs to ocean-conservation charities.
Pre-registration is open for the first NFTs drop.
