Visiting Antarctica is unlike any other experience on earth, and that’s no hyperbole. The southernmost continent has harsh conditions, yet supports incredible wildlife. Only a handful of the world’s yachts have ventured to Antarctica, making it all the more special. The 300-foot (91.5-meter) Tranquility is among the largest planning to cruise the region, offering charter itineraries from December 2023 to February 2024. Here are a few reasons you should charter Tranquility in Antarctica next year.
EXPERIENCE COUNTS
Capt. Jan Rautawaara, at the helm of the superyacht, has cruised the continent previously. (On a related side note, he further knows northern climes well, being of Finnish heritage.) He therefore is familiar with both the stunning scenery and the challenges that ice-laden waters bring. Tranquility, a 2014 delivery from Oceanco, has reinforcements for traveling in ice, of course. Like Rautawaara, the yacht has been in these conditions before, having crossed the Northwest Passage and cruised both Greenland and northern Norway.
CUSTOM ITINERARIES
Just like a traditional yacht charter, if you charter Tranquility in Antarctica, the team from Camper & Nicholsons, which has her central listing, will tailor the itinerary to make the most of your visit. For instance, you could visit Deception Island like early explorers did. Imagine cruising past icebergs as tall as buildings in the Antarctic Sound. Rautawaara asserts that no matter what your itinerary holds, you’ll appreciate “the majestic untouched nature, the solitude, the silence, and the feeling of entering another world.”
NATURALISTS AND GUIDES CAN COME
Visiting remote places on earth means seeing and experiencing natural wonders sometimes not possible anywhere else. Therefore, you can request a naturalist to come on your charter. Two of the superyacht’s nine staterooms are convertible cabins, so a naturalist can be with you the full time. As you spy humpback whales breaching, leopard seals leaping, and penguins chattering, you will learn more about their habitats and their own habits. You can even have other scientific specialists or a heli-skiing guide stay onboard, too, thanks to the convertible cabins.
LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS
Since we all head off on vacation to relax, why not do so in indulgent surroundings? Tranquility has floor-to-ceiling windows in her bridge-deck stateroom. Two suites sit on the main deck, one of which also has a balcony. Your full charter party can enjoy a spa area—perfect for warming up after visiting the icy land. It features a hammam, a Finnish sauna, and a massage room, as well as a gym. Throughout the yacht, wenge wood, marble, and gold leaf set the ambience, as do chandeliers. If any of you are musical, you’ll appreciate the transparent grand piano in one of the two lounges onboard.
Ultimately, Rautawaara says, he wants the collective experience in Antarctica to “broaden our own understanding of nature and make us realize how important it is to preserve this fragile life around us.”
You can charter Tranquility in Antarctica next year starting at $1.6 million per week.
