Naval architects rely on the computerized analysis known as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate how yachts will perform. Sometimes, though, they still want to see a physical test. Van Oossanen Naval Architects and Heesen Yachts’ naval-architecture team conducted a series of scale-model tests recently. The Heesen Project Setteesettanta tank testing occurred over two days in England, and you’re among the first to see the results.
Since the superyacht, signed last year, will be 187 feet (57 meters), it’s simply not practical to test a full-size hull. This is true for any superyacht, too. Therefore, in this case, the scale model measured nearly 12 feet (3.6 meters) long. The team put the Heesen Project Setteesettanta (pronounced set-tay ee set-tan-ta) hull model through a variety of simulated sea states. In fact, the conditions ranged from calm waters to “very harsh conditions,” says Perry van Oossanen of the eponymous studio. “We had paid particular attention in the design to achieving low accelerations, in both pitch and roll—which are the measure of comfort onboard—and to ensuring a dry vessel in spite of her reversed-bow design.”
While stability is always an important consideration, “Project Setteesettanta sports a fourth deck, a large pool, and a low stern,” points out Sjoerd van Herk, Heesen’s senior naval architect. Each of these on its own can impact stability, so the combination “allowed us to flex our mental muscles,” he adds.
The good news: The scale model passed its tests. As a result, the shipyard and design teams still anticipate her achieving an 18-knot top speed with twin MTUs. They further anticipate her seeing a range of 3,900 nautical miles at 12 knots.
The keel laying for this full-custom yacht, for repeat clients, should occur in September. Until then, yacht watchers are remaining patient, hoping for more details. Her interior design should particularly be strikingly different. Cristiano Gatto says, “I’m sure it will create many ripples.” Although he isn’t revealing specifics, the superyacht will have a dedicated owners’ deck. She’ll also have a main-deck VIP and four guest staterooms below decks.
