The fourth Wally for her owner, and the 48th all-carbon-composite sailing superyacht from the brand, launched on April 22. The Wally101 Full Custom yacht (name withheld for now) combines family-oriented amenities with the soul of a fierce competitor.
The project features naval architecture from Judel/Vrolijk & Co. and follows the Wallycento box rule. Briefly, this rule combines specific parameters for length, beam, displacement, and more to get the best regatta performance. In this case, LOA is 101 feet (30.8 meters), beam is about 25 feet (7.49 meters), and light-ship displacement is 55 tons. Luca Basani, Wally’s founder and chief designer, says that displacement is nearly 15 percent less than similarly sized and configured sailing yachts. “This achievement is accomplished thanks to the latest carbon-fiber technology pioneered and developed over the years by Wally,” he notes. Additionally, he says, the lifting keel alone represents 40 percent of the weight. The lifting keel certainly boosts upwind performance, increasing draft from 15’4” to 22’3” (4.7 to 6.8 meters).
The Wally101 Full Custom yacht further features in-house-developed systems to save the crew some labor during racing. For example, the Wally Enhanced Hydraulic System uses several hydraulic pumps for sail handling.
The owner and his family want to cruise, of course, so several arrangement features cater to their time together. Outside, for instance, a cockpit sits amidships, ideal for meals throughout the day. It can seat up to eight people, although the three staterooms accommodate six people. Yet another alfresco feature is a big sunpad, aft. Inside, meanwhile, even more people can join the family for relaxation and entertainment. A total of 10 to 12 people, in fact, can get together in the saloon. Four crewmembers will be aboard for private travel as well, with the main galley near their cabins.
Delivery should take place in time for the summer season. The intended racing schedule has not been announced, however.
