Although an Italian flag hung over her transom for her launch, it easily could have been a checkered flag. The owner of the 10th Mangusta GranSport 33 yacht that celebrated her launch on January 14 is racecar driver Max Verstappen. Similar to the name of his fan-gear line, he’s christened the yacht Unleash the Lion.
Although Mangusta didn’t reveal Verstappen’s identity, or the yacht’s name, videos circulating on social media captured him and his partner, Kelly Piquet, at the yard for the launch ceremony.
A Formula One driver with the Red Bull Racing team, Verstappen is, of course, accustomed to speed. The Mangusta GranSport 33 series—which saw hull number one, the yacht Perfect Lady, splash in 2020—is capable of a 25-knot top end. The 109-footer (33.3-meter) additionally cruises at 21 knots at half load. If Verstappen will use the yacht Unleash the Lion in the Med, he and his guests will be able to port hop swiftly along the French and Italian Rivieras. Quadruple Volvo Penta IPSs lent the boost while simultaneously occupying a smaller footprint below decks than traditional diesels.

Alberto Mancini of AM Yacht Design designed the Mangusta GranSport 33’s exterior lines to complement her performance. They’re rakish, sleek, and sexy, revealing some healthy-sized social spaces outside and inside. For instance, the raised foredeck, accessible from the sundeck, has a sunpad, a settee, and a hot tub. The arrangement is comfortable enough for multiple people to spend time together, whether soaking up sun rays or sipping cocktails. Not surprisingly, customers typically ask for sunpads and/or hot tubs on the sundeck, too. Inside, meanwhile, five staterooms spread across two decks. Like other owners, Verstappen has a 431-square-foot (40-square-meter) master suite forward on the main deck.
Mangusta is finalizing sea trials and the last outfitting details before handing over the yacht Unleash the Lion in time for summer. Watch the video below to get a better sense of the Mangusta GranSport 33’s spaces. The builder is also readying other Mangusta GranSport projects for clients. In bigger news, though, its parent company, Overmarine Group, is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year.
