Costa Rica is still relatively new to superyacht owners and guests, along with their crews. But, for those who are also fishing fanatics, the Latin American country has been a magnet for decades. In fact, Los Sueños Marina was the first government-approved marina, opening in 2001. Its popularity since then has led to Safe Harbor Marinas recently buying it.
The newly renamed Safe Harbor Los Sueños is a large facility. In fact, the 200 slips and initial 80 dry-storage units reached completion in 2003. Currently, the 200 slips, for yachts to 180 feet (about 55 meters), still exist, while the dry slips now total 166. The marina has its own fuel dock, too. A Marina Village boasting several shops and restaurants, meanwhile, opened in December 2003. Further underscoring its importance, Costa Rica’s president himself laid the cornerstone for the Los Sueños Marina when construction began in the late 1990s.

The property is part of a resort sitting on Herradura Bay, in central Costa Rica. The bay’s horseshoe shape is the inspiration for the resort and marina name. Calm waters dominate the shoreline, making nearby beaches popular options. Ziplining, horseback riding, and exploring the rainforest are also big attractions.
Of course, the number-one reason why people head to Los Sueños is the fishing. For example, snapper, grouper, mackerel, rooster fish, and more are all available inshore. Offshore, you can hook wahoo, mahi mahi, sailfish, and marlin. (On a related subjects, circle hooks are mandatory. Some species are also strictly catch and release.) Notably, the marina hosts the annual Los Sueños Triple Crown Tournament. It’s a three-leg billfish tournament in January, February, and March.

Los Sueños, which is Spanish for “The Dreams,” fits well into Safe Harbor Marinas’ global footprint. The company owns 140 marinas and shipyards and has customers who visit multiple destinations.
