This week marks The Superyacht Cup Palma 2019 edition, in which several superyachts will try to prevent the famous J-Class Velsheda (below) from repeating her 2018 victory. A total of 14 yachts spanning a variety of sizes will race in different classes. And, ultimately, they’ll race in the spirit of good fun.
The Superyacht Cup Palma is the longest-running superyacht regatta in Europe. Year after year, it attracts a strong field of entrants for a few reasons. Chief among them, the weather is ideal for racing. Crew and even owners who like to be onboard often talk about a consistent breeze. Second, of course, is Palma itself. The racing village is close to the Old Town and world-famous cathedral.
While the event runs from June 19 to 22, with a welcome cocktail party kicking things off on the 19th, the crews naturally want to get out on the water and see some action. Velsheda should receive a run for her money from fellow J Class yacht Topaz. These Js have met before, and surely will continue meeting for years to come. Meanwhile, Kealoha (top) is among two yachts competing in their first-ever Cup. Interestingly, The Superyacht Cup Palma is further welcoming Bequia (below) to town for the first time. However, the yacht is no stranger to racing. She has participated in the Candy Store Cup stateside, for example.
Although the race course will see quite the spectacle, not all the fun takes places there. Closer to shore, the Marinepool Paddle Board Challenge happens on the 21st. Several of the yachts’ crews will compete in teams of four. Of course, as always, a handful of social events throughout the week pledge to bring people together in even more of a spirit of camaraderie.
