With her captivating exterior lines by Francesco Paszkowski Design, Moka is the first expedition-style yacht built by Sanlorenzo, specifically a Sanlorenzo 460Exp. Moka is exactly what her New York owners were looking for: a yacht capable of negotiating the world’s seas in all kinds of weather.
Moka can cruise autonomously for three months, without pulling into any harbor. Befitting an expedition yacht, she has plentiful refrigerators for stocking food and containers for waste collection. While not ice-classed, Moka can reach unusual and remote areas. Stretching 138 feet (42 meters) in length and 30 feet (9.2 meters) in beam, the 460-GRT Moka can cruise for more than 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots without refueling. This is possible thanks to her 13,209-gallon (50,000-liter) fuel tank and twin 1,300-hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines.
One of the owner’s specific requests was a large array of toys. Moka has tenders, speedboats, and fishing boats of up to 29 feet (9 meters) as well as diving equipment and a variety of other toys stowed aft on the main deck and in the roomy aft lower deck. However, his real heart’s desire was an “endless” swimming pool. Aft on the large teak deck, it’s glass-enclosed and measures about 16 feet by eight feet (4.8 x 2.5 meters). When this area is free of tenders and toys, it converts to a generously sized beach club, elegantly furnished with outdoor ottomans, folding chairs and tables, and large round sunloungers by Paola Lenti. This is where the owner of Moka and his guests will be closest to the sea and can enjoy both it and the warmth of the sun. A bar, a sauna, and a steam room are additionally steps away.
The interior of Moka is extremely cozy, well-balanced and welcoming. As with every Sanlorenzo, the 460 Exp’s decor is tailored to the owner’s tastes. Alternating light and dark colors aboard Moka also help create a calm, relaxing ambience. Beige and white are the dominant hues, with red and grey accents, resulting in a decidedly contemporary style. Huge side windows flood the main saloon with natural light, while from outside they underscore the external profile, emphasizing the Sanlorenzo bloodline. Aft, a large window looks out on the swimming pool. (The main entry to the interior is therefore off the starboard side.)
The skylounge is the best spot aboard for informal relaxation. It exudes the same atmosphere of chilled-out calm as the rest of Moka. This is thanks to the fact that the owners are quite sporty, outdoorsy folk, more concerned with enjoying the sea than opulence. Bleached American oak, mahogany, and teak comprise the soberly elegant, timeless furniture, enlivened with vividly colored leather.
A mini herb garden in the galley offers fresh fragrant herbs—ideal for Italian cuisine and essential for a three-month cruise. All equipment is by the Italian company Boffi, a frequent partner of Sanlorenzo. The room revolves around a center island, much in the vein of a professional kitchen, so that chef and crew alike can work fluidly and comfortably.
The owner’s suite is one of the five cabins aboard Moka. Four large double cabins are all on the lower deck. (Note that Sanlorenzo also offers the 460Exp with accommodations for 12.) All feature the same beautifully understated decor. The headboard here is covered in sharkskin. All the blankets, cushions, and bed linens were customized by Ivano Redaelli for Moka.
Unsurprisingly for such sporty individuals, Moka’s owners wanted a gym aboard. It’s on the lower deck with the rest of the guest accommodations, plus a second endless pool, a saunaa and steam room. The gym features large windows on both sides, affording breathtaking views of the surrounding sea. It also boasts a portrait by Italian painter Tatiana Villani, whose work is to be found throughout the yacht. Also aboard are glass sculptures by Hungarian artist Peter Botos sourced at the Gestalt gallery in Tuscany’s Pietrasanta. Alice Ippolito did a series of photographs specifically for Moka too that reflect her color scheme. A telling flourish that illustrates the meticulous planning that has gone into every detail aboard.
With the same stylish good looks as any Italian luxury megayacht customized to meet her owners’ specific requirements, the Sanlorenzo 460Exp is an authentic wanderer. In short, a vessel that will slake the owners’ thirst for discovery, the pleasures of cruising and living life to the fullest.
