There’s a lot to be said about building a custom megayacht. You tailor everything from the superstructure to the systems to your liking. However, not everyone is knowledgeable about, or enjoys, planning out the technical systems. In a change of pace, Feadship is bringing Project Freedom to the market. It combines the fun of starting from a blank sheet of paper with the ease of a proven engineering platform.
Bas Nederpelt, Feadship’s commercial director, says the seeds were sown early last year. A current Feadship customer outlined his vision for another megayacht in the 197- to 213-foot (60- to 65-meter) size range. Soon, both sides realized they could partner up, to leverage their experience to smooth the design and construction process for others. As Nederpelt explains in the video below, “What makes it special is that here, we have the opportunity to also bring a lot of our own ideas.” It’s also special, he continues, to have a client who “looks beyond his own wishes.”
While Project Freedom has set technical systems—including a suggested propulsion system incorporating diesel gensets and azimuthing thrusters—the rest truly is up to you. Jan Schaffers, senior designer at Feadship’s De Voot Naval Architects, says profiles like the ones at top are just some of the possibilities. Inside, meanwhile, FM Architettura has dreamed up even more possibilities you likely have not seen. Francesca Muzzio, the founder and CEO, says, “The vision is not only talking about style, but also talking about experience.” Further to that point, her team will work with you “to find areas to reinvigorate, recharge,” and otherwise re-imagine.
One such possibility, for example, is a garden suite. Project Freedom can include a true plants-and-trees mini oasis within a stateroom. While this is a personal favorite of Muzio, she also quite likes the idea of a so-called holistic garden. Here, you get a room-within-your-room for yoga, massage, and other self-care.
Pools with glass bottoms, party platforms… freedom on a Feadship, and therefore Project Freedom, take many different shapes.
