Growing up on a farm in Ontario is certainly about as far away from yachting as one can get. Yet, it’s exactly where Bobby Genovese, currently the owner of the Feadship BG Charade, started his long love affair with boats and yachts. In the latest episode of the Megayacht News Radio podcast, we have an engaging conversation with Genovese. He sheds light on his unexpected journey into boats and superyachts, plus a lot more. Ultimately, he shares tales filled with adventure and a genuine love for helping create unforgettable experiences on the water.
In fact, Genovese credits his own unforgettable experiences on the water to his brother. Notably, his brother is the whole reason he bought his very first boat, along with his second quite soon after. Namely, the two were the historic racing boats Miss Canada III and Miss Canada IV. Next came more historic yachts, along with bigger and bigger yachts. Genovese’s first step into superyacht ownership, meanwhile, was with a Lazzara. Not only will you hear how he didn’t buy when he first considered her, but you’ll also learn how the yacht BG Charade came to become his. This 154-foot (47-meter) Feadship originally belonged to the late Paul Allen of Microsoft. Significant changes transformed her into a successful family yacht and charter yacht—and eventually a yacht on TV’s Below Deck.
Genovese offers a behind-the-scenes look at the joys and challenges of maintaining a vessel like BG Charade. He candidly shares the financial realities, for instance, from crew salaries to unforeseen repairs. He further candidly shares why “easy” is the one-word summary of what owners like him want at the end of the day. With insights into running a successful charter business and BG Charade’s role on the TV show Below Deck, Genovese paints a vivid picture of the freedom and flexibility a private yacht offers.
Finally, since his family dynamics are shifting, Genovese discusses how he’s selling BG Charade. But, he’s not leaving yachting. Instead, he’s looking forward to embracing new adventures on a smaller project.
Tune in for a captivating journey into yachting, rich with personal stories and practical insights you won’t want to miss. Though few people in yachting grew up slinging hay, we all can relate to the passion of a farm-boy-turned-boating-fanatic.
