Some people carry a rabbit’s foot for luck. Others turn to numerology. The number eight is lucky in Chinese culture, a symbol of wealth and success. Double eights—八八 in Chinese characters—represent double the luck. The Double Luck superyacht concept, an 88-meter (289-foot) sailing yacht, therefore follows suit.
Lobanov Design is collaborating with Oceanco and Dykstra Naval Architects for this proposal, which could become a contract. Igor Lobanov of the eponymous studio says the smooth, minimalistic classic British Gran Turismo cars inspired him for the styling. He pairs these lines with a slightly reversed bow and, interestingly, a superstructure more like a cockpit. Known for bold designs, such as that of the ex-Jubilee (now Kaos) with Oceanco, Lobanov Design remains mindful of what sailing yachts are all about, however. Unmistakably, sailors enjoy the sort of silence and stronger connection with nature that results from the act of sailing and the lifestyle. The Double Luck superyacht concept consequently aims for an ambience of calm, balance, and Zen.
Soft curves throughout aid in that regard, as does the emphasis on the outdoors. The Double Luck superyacht concept has three decks’ worth of alfresco areas, in fact. These include a two-deck winter garden (below), a.k.a. a Zen garden.
Further notable, one of the two DynaRig masts (above) is a central part of that garden. The DynaRig design comes from Dykstra Naval Architects. “Instead of trying to hide them, we turned them into a very important part of the spaces,” Lobanov explains. “We turned them into unique features.” The other DynaRig is equally a central part of the main saloon, which like the winter garden introduces abundant light inside. That in turn also engenders a stronger connection to the cruising grounds and sense of relaxation.
Even the way spaces flow from one to another engenders relaxation and serenity, Lobanov says. He and Oceanco felt it important for the owners and guests to feel these emotions throughout the yacht. It explains why, for example, stairways aren’t hidden, and no fixed furnishings interrupt pathways. Plus, spaces are symmetrical for even more balance and peacefulness.
Finally, for a more peaceful relationship with the cruising environment, the Double Luck superyacht concept uses Oceanco’s power-regeneration system in conjunction with the DynaRig system. Additionally, Oceanco says a single crewmember can operate the system, with deployment complete in six minutes via pushbutton controls. Guests can remain beneath the spars during this time, too, since no interference or stepping out of the way occurs.
Potential owners can, of course, tailor the interior to their liking. Lobanov Design has a few exterior color schemes to consider as well. They include an all-white profile with yellow-gold rig detailing, and all-black with copper detailing.
